September 11, 2001 will remain long in people's minds because of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in the United States of America.

Today marks 24 years since the tragic event that shocked America and the entire world. Thousands of people around the globe watched on their televisions the apocalyptic scenes that unfolded in one of the most important economic centers of the Western world.

The event began with the hijacking of four airplanes by Al Qaeda terrorists. At 8:46 a.m., one of them crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York, creating a deep crack in the building.

17 minutes later another passenger plane crashed into the south tower, creating a huge fireball.

The victims in the twin towers were 2,752, including 343 firefighters and 60 police officers. The majority of the victims were civilians of 70 different nationalities.

The then-President, George W. Bush, informed the American people that the country had experienced a terrorist attack. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration suspended all flights, the first time in American history that air transport had been suspended.

Just a few miles outside Washington, another plane crashed into the Pentagon building, engulfing it in flames, causing hundreds of deaths and injuries.

In November 2001, the United States, with furious attacks, removed the Taliban movement from power in Afghanistan.

At the time, Afghanistan was ruled by the Taliban, who were allied with Al Qaeda.
