Von der Leyen: EU-US cooperation in bilateral interest

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Scholz spoke at the World Economic Forum in favor of close cooperation with the US.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned new US President Donald Trump against starting a trade war with Europe, signaling her willingness to negotiate. "There are no other economies in the world that are as interconnected as ours," she said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

European companies employ 3.5 million Americans in the US. Another million American jobs depend directly on trade with Europe. "The volume of trade between us amounts to 1.5 trillion euros, which corresponds to 30 percent of world trade. Both sides would be risking a lot," von der Leyen said.

High tariffs on imports

During the election campaign, Trump announced that he intends to impose new tariffs of 10 to 20 percent on imports. For Chinese goods, this tariff should even go up to 60 percent. He wants to use this to strengthen the US as a manufacturing country and reduce the trade deficit. Trump has overlooked the fact that European companies sell significantly more goods in the US than American companies in the EU.

Scholz calls for moderation in stance towards the US

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also expressed hope in Davos that the US will remain one of Germany's closest allies even under President Trump. This is in the interests of both sides, Scholz said. However, the German chancellor called for moderation in his stance towards the US. "Not every press conference in Washington, not every tweet should plunge Europe into heated existential debates," he said. Close cooperation between Europe and the US is essential for global peace and security and an engine for successful economic development, Scholz said./ DW
