Ukraine announces the "humanitarian corridor" for ships stranded in

Ukraine announced a "humanitarian corridor" on Thursday to allow dozens of cargo ships stranded in its ports since the outbreak of war last year to sail to the Black Sea, where shipping routes have been under surveillance since Russia pulled out of the deal. to allow wheat exports, reports Reuters.

At least initially, the corridor appears to apply to ships such as container ships that have been stuck in Ukrainian ports since the February 2022 invasion and are not covered by the agreement that opened the ports to grain shipments last year.

But it could be a major test of Ukraine's ability to reopen sea lanes at a time when Russia is trying to restore its de facto blockade after abandoning the wheat deal last month.

In a statement, the Ukrainian navy said the routes had already been proposed by Ukraine directly to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The routes "will be used primarily for civilian vessels that have been in the Ukrainian ports of Chornomorsk, Odesa and Pivdenny since the start of the full-scale occupation by Russia on February 24, 2022."

"Vessels whose owners/captains officially confirm that they are ready to sail in current conditions will be allowed to pass through," the statement said, adding that risks remain from mines and the military threat from Russia./ CNA
