Trump presents the closing arguments of the campaign

Republican Donald Trump gave the closing speech of his campaign against Democratic rival Kamala Harris on Sunday, in an evening that was peppered with insults and harsh language directed at her and various groups. In his speech in his hometown of New York, the former President repeated his theme that Americans will be better off if he wins. Vice President Harris delivers her closing remarks on Tuesday, a week before the Nov. 5 election.

The Republican candidate for president delivered the speech at Madison Square Garden, one of the most popular arenas in the country. He said that a presidency of his would restore the American dream.

"But for that to happen, we must defeat Kamala Harris and stop a radical leftist agenda with a landslide victory that cannot be manipulated."

Mr. Trump has claimed without evidence during the campaign that the Democrats are getting ready to rig the election.

He used his usual rhetoric on foreign policy and immigration, calling for the death penalty for any migrant who kills an American citizen.

"For years we have spent on foreign countries, we have devoted ourselves to the protection of foreign borders and foreign territories, but now we will finally build our country, protect our borders and protect our citizens. It's called 'America First' and it's going to happen at unprecedented levels," he said.

Former President Trump emphasized the economy, which has also been the main issue of the campaign.

"If Kamala Harris gets four more years, our economy will never recover. If I win, we will rapidly build the largest economy in the history of the world - which is what we had in our last term."

He added a new proposal aimed at helping the elderly and the middle class, suggesting a tax break for those caring for elderly relatives.

His proposal follows that of Democrat Harris who has proposed federal funding to cover home care costs for older Americans.

The evening was punctuated by insulting and inappropriate tones from speakers supporting Mr Trump towards Ms Harris and various ethnic groups. Personal attacks on Ms. Harris have been constant during Mr. Trump's campaign.

Meanwhile, Ms. Harris herself campaigned in Philadelphia, an important Democratic stronghold, on Sunday.

"We shouldn't wake up the day after the election and regret what we could have done in the next nine days. So let's do everything we can in these nine days," she said.

It was an effort to mobilize Democrats to get out and vote, as a counterweight to rural areas that lean more toward Mr. Trump in the swing state of Pennsylvania. Ms. Harris delivered a message of unity.

"From the beginning, the goal of our campaign has been to build coalitions, to strengthen the community. We must understand that we all have more things that unite us than things that divide us."

The two candidates are in a very close race and in the last days they are trying both to win over those who may still be undecided, and to mobilize their base to vote.

Ms. Harris will deliver the closing speech on Tuesday, a week before the election, in front of the White House, a seemingly symbolic choice, since it is the very place where former President Donald Trump spoke on January 6 before the attack on the Capitol./ VOA
