UN: World far from target to combat climate change

Global efforts to combat climate change are not keeping pace, the United Nations has said.

The UN has made these statements as new data shows that greenhouse gases are accumulating in nature faster than ever before in human history.

Current national plans to limit carbon emissions are unlikely to reduce pollution levels by 2030, the UN analysis said, stalling efforts to keep the Earth's temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

These data were published as a separate report stated that greenhouse gases have increased over 11 percent in the last two decades, and that atmospheric concentrations have increased to a record level in 2023.

Researchers are concerned that forests are losing their ability to absorb carbon, which may have contributed to record levels of the gas in the atmosphere.

A UN agency tasked with addressing the issue has analyzed state plans to cap carbon in nearly 200 countries.

Experts call for the global temperature not to rise above 1.5 degrees Celsius, as, according to them, it could have extremely dangerous consequences for humanity. The World Meteorological Organization has said that the last time the Earth had such concentrations of carbon in the atmosphere was 3-5 million years ago, when the average temperature of the planet was 2-3 degrees warmer than now, and the levels of water was 10-20 meters higher.

According to this organization, the level of greenhouse gases has reached record numbers in 2023, and the cause has been the forest fires in Canada and the climatic conditions dictated by the El Nino phenomenon./ Rel
