Trump announces deal with Iran, reopening of Strait of Hormuz expected

United States President Donald Trump has announced the achievement of an agreement with Iran, which he said will lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Trump said the agreement is expected to be signed on Friday and will ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains free of shipping forever.

However, the US and Iran have given different signals regarding further steps after signing the agreement.

Iran's deputy foreign minister said 60-day nuclear talks would only begin after Washington releases billions of dollars in frozen Iranian funds. A US official has disputed that claim.

Meanwhile, Israel has yet to officially react to the deal. Trump has criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him "a very difficult guy."

These developments come after Israeli forces carried out airstrikes in Beirut earlier on Sunday.

Trump made the announcement on his 80th birthday, just hours before a UFC event at the White House to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. According to a US official, Tehran had requested that the announcement not be made before midnight Iranian time.

The agreement has been welcomed by several countries, including Pakistan and Qatar, which have played a mediating role in the process.

Following the announcement, Brent and U.S. crude oil prices fell, while Asian markets rose on Monday, reflecting investor optimism about easing tensions in the region./ CNA
