Romanian president names new candidate for prime minister

Romanian President Nicos Dan announced that he is nominating a new candidate for prime minister to form a government, following the withdrawal of MEP Eugen Tomac, who was initially nominated for the post.

"Mr. Eugen Tomac withdrew his candidacy this morning and, in these circumstances, I nominate Mr. Adrian Vestea for the position of prime minister," the Romanian president said.

Adrian Vestea, 52, a member of the liberal party, is the chairman of the Brasov county council in central Romania.

Tomac had sought to lead a technocratic government, but failed to secure the necessary support in parliament. Parties in parliament have previously said that a civilian minority government would be better than a technocratic government.

Vesta has 10 days to form a government and secure a vote of confidence from parliament.

Romania, which has never held early elections, is expected to hold regular parliamentary elections in 2028.
