Trump: Charlie Kirk, a great American hero and a martyr for freedom

US President Donald Trump praised the activist killed in an assassination attempt, Charlie Kirk, as a great American hero and martyr for freedom.

Trump's speech came as he and other prominent conservatives gathered Sunday evening to honor the slain conservative political activist, whose work they said they must now carry forward.

"He is now a martyr for America's freedom. I know I speak for everyone here today when I say that none of us will ever forget Charlie. And history will not forget him now either," Trump said in his tribute.

The memorial service for Kirk, whom Trump credits with a key role in his 2024 election victory, drew tens of thousands of attendees, including Vice President JD Vance, other senior administration officials and young conservatives. /CNA
