Trump: If Russia escalates pressure, US will help defend Poland and the Baltics

US President Donald Trump declared that the US will help defend Poland and the Baltic states if Russia continues its escalations on the continent.

Trump's response comes at a time of growing pressure from NATO over rising levels of Russian escalation in Europe. Several countries, including Lithuania, Estonia and the Czech Republic, have called on NATO to implement a stronger response to Russian provocations, including shooting down Russian warplanes that violate the alliance's borders.

The reactions come after Russia violated NATO airspace in Estonia for 12 minutes on Friday, prompting the country to invoke NATO's Article 4 and an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

About a week and a half ago, around 19 drones violated Polish airspace, prompting Poland to do the same.

"We must respond appropriately, including perhaps shooting down Russian fighter jets. What has happened in recent days in Poland and Estonia, and what has been happening in Ukraine for four years now, concerns us all. If we do not stand united, sooner or later it will happen to us too," said Czech President Petr Pavel.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakalie, in a post published on the 'X' platform, also suggested that Russian drones be shot down. /CNA
