Sri Lanka declares Wednesdays a public holiday to save fuel

Asian countries are introducing a series of austerity measures in a bid to save fuel as they face potential shortages following the US and Israel's war with Iran.

Almost 90% of all oil and gas flowing through the Strait of Hormuz last year was destined for Asia, which is the world's largest oil-importing region.

Sri Lanka  has declared every Wednesday an official holiday to save fuel, and drivers must now register for a National Fuel Card which rations the amount of fuel people can buy.

In  Myanmar,  private vehicles are only allowed to circulate on alternate days, depending on their license plates.

Bangladesh  has accelerated Ramadan celebrations in universities and introduced planned power cuts across the country to save energy.

In  the Philippines , some government offices have mandated that staff work from home at least one day a week. /CNA
