Middle East conflict widens/ South Korea prepares for "worst-case

South Korean President Lee Jae-Myung has declared that it was time to prepare worst-case scenario measures to save energy as the situation in the Middle East worsens.

His comments came as the country's Defense Ministry said it has yet to receive an official request from the United States regarding President Donald Trump's recent demands for allies, including South Korea, to send ships to the Strait of Hormuz.

Lee said the conflict was expanding beyond initial expectations and the impact on the lives of its citizens was likely to increase.

"We must now prepare measures for worst-case scenarios, considering a prolonged situation ," Lee said during a cabinet meeting.

Possible measures include:

-Mobilizing diplomatic assets to find additional sustainable oil supplies.

-Promoting energy savings and possibly reducing the number of vehicles on the road based on license plate numbers.

-Considering export controls and other emergency measures, such as expanding the operation of nuclear power plants.

-Rapid transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. /CNA
