Slovakia: Thousands of doctors resign due to working conditions

More than 2,700 doctors have resigned from hospitals in Slovakia, as part of an organized protest over working conditions.

The doctors' union, LOZ, has said that this means that more than half of the doctors at the state level have resigned from working in hospitals.

They are ready to withdraw their resignations if the Government fulfills some of their demands. This includes requests for new medical equipment and the hiring of additional staff.

So far, no agreement has been reached with the new Minister of Health, Kamil Shashko.

"It seems that the only way to get everything done in the Slovak health system is to resign," LOZ union leader Peter Visolajsky told reporters in Bratislava.

Shashko's predecessor, Zuzana Dolinkova, resigned at the beginning of October, saying that the Government is not doing enough to support her in strengthening the health system.

The biggest impetus for the mass resignations, which have been forewarned for some time, has been an austerity program announced over the summer by the government led by left-wing Prime Minister Robert Fico.

The program envisages the partial withdrawal of the promise to increase the salaries of doctors and nurses.

The Government's plans to transform hospitals into joint-stock companies have greatly angered the doctors' unions.

Doctors' representatives worry that this is a step towards "servile privatization" of hospitals./REL
