Putin orders training of Russian nuclear forces

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered massive exercises of the country's nuclear forces, including missile launchers, as he continues to escalate tensions with the West over the war in Ukraine.

Speaking to military leaders via video link, Putin said the drills will simulate the actions of senior officials in the use of nuclear weapons, and will include practical launches of nuclear-capable and cruise missiles.

Putin, who has repeatedly cited nuclear power whenever the West has increased support for Ukraine, stressed on Tuesday that Russia's nuclear arsenal continues to be a "stable guarantor of the state's sovereignty and security."

"Considering the increase in geopolitical tensions and new threats, it is important for us to have modern strategic forces that are always ready for war," he said, reaffirming that he sees Russia's nuclear weapons as "the most extreme measure for maintaining security".

Putin has said that Moscow will continue to modernize its nuclear force, fielding new missiles with higher precision, faster launch speeds, and increased capabilities to outmaneuver missile defenses.

Last month, the Russian leader warned the United States and NATO allies that allowing Ukraine to use long-range Western weapons to strike deep into Russia would put NATO at war with its own country. .

He has reinforced his message by introducing a new version of nuclear doctrine that considers a conventional attack on Russia by a non-nuclear state backed by a nuclear force as a joint attack by both on its own state – a warning of clearly for the US and Kiev's allies.

Putin also mentioned that the new doctrine foresees the use of nuclear weapons in the event of a mass attack.

Tuesday's maneuvers are a continuation of a series of other exercises of Russia's nuclear forces.

Earlier in the year, the Russian army conducted joint military exercises with Moscow's ally, Belarus, on whose territory some of Russia's tactical nuclear weapons are positioned./ REL
