Iran executes Iranian-German national after he was convicted of terrorism

Iran executed Iranian-German citizen Jamshid Sharmahd who was convicted of terrorist attacks, Iranian state media reported on Monday.

Jamshid Sharmahd was sentenced to death in 2023 on charges of "corruption in the land", a crime punishable by death under Iran's Islamic laws.

He had been accused by Iran of leading a group that supports the monarchy. The group is held responsible by Iranian authorities for a deadly bombing in 2008 and for planning other attacks in the country.

The arrest of Jamshid Sharmahdi was announced in 2020 and in the then statement of the Ministry of Intelligence he was described as "the leader of the Tondar terrorist group, which directed the terrorist acts against Iran, from America".

Tondar, based in Los Angeles, says it aims to restore the Iranian monarchy that was overthrown by the Islamic revolution of 1979. The group runs pro-Iranian opposition radio and television stations abroad.

"The execution of our fellow citizen Jamshid Sharmahd is a serious crime," the leader of Germany's CDU Christian Democrats, Friedrich Merz, told Reuters on Monday.

The opposition leader asked the German government to react decisively, saying that "quiet diplomacy" has failed.

He suggested the review of relations with Iran, adding that "the Iranian ambassador should be expelled"./VOA
