White House: Secretary Austin needs further medical attention

White House Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby said Sunday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's doctors think he may need further health care.

"We'll see when he can be released from the hospital, but doctors think he still needs medical attention, including physical therapy," Mr. Kirby said in an interview with CBS television's "Face the Nation."

Mr. Kirby said that President Joe Biden and Mr. Austin "are in regular communication" and that the secretary is "actively engaged" by the hospital.

Mr. Austin remains hospitalized and is in good condition, the Pentagon said Sunday, adding that there was still no release date.

The Defense Secretary, 70, was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland on December 22 to be treated for prostate cancer.

He returned to the hospital on January 1 due to complications, including a urinary tract infection.

Mr. Biden said Friday that he has confidence in Secretary Austin, even as he acknowledged that Mr. Austin was wrong to keep the hospitalization a secret.

The White House was caught by surprise when it learned of Mr. Austin's hospitalization, and the fact that he kept it a secret was criticized by lawmakers./ VOA
