Frederik X becomes king of Denmark

Frederik X became the new king of Denmark on Sunday after his mother, Queen Margrethe II, officially signed her resignation after 52 years on the throne.

Margrethe, 83, shocked the nation on New Year's Eve when she announced she had become the first Danish monarch in 900 years to voluntarily abdicate the crown.

Thousands of people lined the streets of the Danish capital on Sunday to greet Frederik and say goodbye to Margrethe.

Frederik also formally became king after Margrethe signed the declaration of abdication during a meeting with the Council of State in the Danish Parliament on Sunday morning.

Later in the day, Frederik was proclaimed king by the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, on the balcony of the Parliament, with the words "Long live King Frederik the 10th".

"My hope is to become the unifying king of tomorrow. This is a task that I take with pride, honor and pleasure", said Frederik in his first speech after becoming king.

He was joined on the balcony by his Australian-born wife Mary, who is now Queen, as well as children Christian, who is heir to the throne, Princess Isabelle, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent.

Later, the new king and queen were paraded in a carriage through the crowded streets of Copenhagen to return to their residence, Amalienborg, the royal complex built in the 1750s in central Copenhagen.

They took the throne at a time when the Danish monarchy is enjoying great public support.

In the latest poll taken after Margrethe announced she would abdicate, 82 percent of Danes said they expect Frederik to be good or very good in his role, while 86 percent said the same of Mary .

Margrethe, who had said in the past that she would keep the throne forever, has not revealed the reasons for her decision to abdicate, but said that a back surgery she underwent last year had made her think about the future. REL
