Israel continues its offensive in Gaza

Israel continued its bombardment of the Gaza Strip on Saturday as the war against Hamas approaches 100 days with no end in sight. In the southern city of Rafah, an Israeli airstrike killed 10 people, the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry said.

Israel says its target is the militants and that it makes every effort to minimize the consequences for civilians. But the scale of the killings in Gaza and the dire humanitarian situation has shocked world opinion and prompted growing calls for a ceasefire.

The Israeli military said on Saturday that its forces had killed a number of militants in the southern Khan Younis area and central Gaza.
Hamas said its fighters fired on an Israeli helicopter in Khan Younis. In the central part of the Gaza Strip, residents reported intense gun battles and tank bombardments and Israeli airstrikes in Al-Bureij, Al-Nusseirat and Al-Maghazi.

The Israeli military said it targeted militants and a Hamas command center in those areas.

More than 20 casualties were reported in northern Gaza, Beit Lahiya and Daraj neighborhood in Gaza City. Israel has announced a new phase of fighting, withdrawing some forces from northern Gaza, where they were deployed three weeks after militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, sparking a war that marked 100 days on Sunday.

Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf Al-Qidra said Israeli attacks killed 135 Palestinians and wounded 312 in the past 24 hours. He said 23,843 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed since the war began. Israel says it has killed at least 8,000 fighters so far and that it has no alternative but to destroy Hamas in Gaza after the militants, who have vowed to destroy Israel, killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 240 hostages in an attack on 7 October./ VOA
