USA, another attack in Syria/ Hits the facility used by Iran

The United States launched strikes against a weapons depot in Syria on Wednesday. The Pentagon said the facility was used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated groups. This is the second time in recent weeks that US forces have launched attacks.

As tensions mount over Israel's war against Hamas, US and coalition troops in Iraq and Syria have been attacked at least 40 times since early October by Iranian-backed forces. Forty-five US troops were injured.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that the strikes were carried out by two US F-15 fighter jets and were in response to recent attacks against US forces. Mr. Austin said that attacks against American troops must stop.

"If attacks against US forces by Iran-linked groups continue, we will not hesitate to take other necessary measures to protect our people," Mr Austin added.

A senior US military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the military had been monitoring the facility in Deir al-Zor province for some time and was confident there were no civilian casualties.

The United States has 900 troops in Syria and another 2,500 in neighboring Iraq, with a mission to advise and assist local forces trying to prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State, which in 2014 took a large part in both countries. but was later defeated.
