US, investigating dangers from smart cars

The United States announced on Thursday that it is launching an investigation into potential security risks from smart vehicles that use technology from countries such as China.

US President Joe Biden announced that he has instructed the Department of Commerce to begin an investigation to determine what measures should be taken to ensure that cars on the roads of the United States will not harm the country's national security.

"Most cars today are connected to the web — they're like smartphones on wheels," President Biden said in a statement. "These cars are connected to our phones, navigation systems, vital infrastructure and the companies that made them. "Smart cars from China can collect important data about our citizens and our infrastructure and can send this data to the People's Republic of China."

Senior US officials told reporters by telephone that they do not have an exact number of vehicles linked to countries of concern to the United States, but said the number is very small.

"It often has to do with cars that are made in China, by Chinese companies. There are very few such cars on the roads of the United States today," said an official.

No bans or tariffs will be imposed at this point, but the work will focus more on gathering information to see what aspects new rules can be imposed on, US officials said.

"We emphasize that it is important to take action before a large number of such cars are on American roads," said an official. "With the rapid growth of the Chinese car export market and the establishment of a presence in other countries, including European countries, it is important to assess the risk to national security now."

Technologies that will receive the most attention are devices and software in vehicles that can collect and transmit data that can be used for malicious purposes.

An official said the potential concerns ranged from privacy issues, such as the content of SMS or email messages linked to the car's system via the driver's phone, to a possible scenario where an entity in Beijing could disable hundreds of thousands of smart Chinese cars on the streets of the United States./ VOA
