USA/ Will the right to citizenship be restricted?

US President Donald Trump has won a victory in the US Supreme Court in his citizenship dispute. The Supreme Court has partially blocked federal judges' orders that temporarily blocked an executive order issued by Trump across the United States. The court did not rule on the constitutionality of the US citizenship order, but instead argued that such nationwide bans exceed the authority of lower courts.

Although the conservative majority of judges left open the possibility of blocking President Trump's order to change the citizenship law, Trump declared it a "giant victory."

Limitation of the right to citizenship
The US Constitution enshrines the principle of jus soli, i.e. the principle of citizenship by birth. This means that all people born on US territory and subject to US jurisdiction are automatically citizens - regardless of the immigration status of their parents.

Trump is questioning this principle, and soon after returning to the White House, he signed an executive order denying citizenship to certain groups of newborns. The order affects children whose mothers do not have permanent resident status at the time of birth - they are tourists or students, for example - and whose fathers are not US citizens or do not have permanent resident status.

Conservative orientation
With the appointment of several conservative judges during Trump's first term, the Supreme Court has taken a political right-wing orientation. Of the nine judges, six are considered conservatives and only three are considered liberals. This is also reflected in the decision on the citizenship law decree, which was made with six votes in favor and three against./ DW
