4.9 tons of cocaine seized in Guatemala/ Largest quantity seized in the country

Guatemala's Interior Ministry has announced what it called a "historic" seizure of 4.9 tons of cocaine at a port in the Central American country on the Pacific Ocean. The cargo was discovered during an anti-drug operation on Sunday in Puerto Quetzal, 85 kilometers south of the capital.

The ministry said it was the largest quantity ever discovered by a single operation by the country's authorities, describing the development as historic. The quantity exceeds the almost 4.4 tonnes that were seized in December 2018 and November 2024.

The drugs, worth $85 million on the local market, were hidden in bags of flour in seven containers that arrived in the country from Costa Rica.

International cartels use Central American ports to smuggle cocaine into the United States, the world's largest consumer of the drug.

In 2025, Guatemalan authorities reported a total of 9.8 tons of cocaine seized, down from 18.2 tons reported in 2024. /CNA
