China executes 11 members of Myanmar fraud mafia

China has executed 11 members of a notorious family that ran fraud centers in Myanmar, state media reports.

A court in Zhejiang province convicted members of the Ming family of crimes including murder, illegal detention, fraud and casino running last September.

The Ming family was one of several clans that ruled the sleepy town of Laukkaing, Myanmar, near the border with China. Under their rule, the impoverished place was transformed into a glittering casino hub.

Their fraudulent empires collapsed in 2023, when they were arrested and handed over to China by ethnic militias who had taken control of Laukkaing during the ongoing civil war.

Fraudulent operations in Myanmar have ensnared thousands of Chinese workers over the years - they are among hundreds of thousands who have been trafficked into these complexes, where they are forced to defraud people overseas.

Last year, the story of a young Chinese actor who flew to Thailand for an acting job but was instead sent to a scam center in Myanmar went viral online. Such stories have added to frustration in Beijing, which has long demanded that Myanmar's junta crack down on the scam mafia.

In the end, it was an escalation of the junta's conflict with ethnic armies that led to the downfall of the Laukkaing mafia. Their crimes resulted in the deaths of 14 Chinese citizens and the injury of many others, the court said. /CNA
