Slovakia against ban on Russian gas imports

After Hungary, Slovakia now intends to file a lawsuit with the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg against the EU's ban on natural gas imports from Russia.

Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Slovakia will file a lawsuit against the fact that the decision was adopted by qualified majority. Slovakia and Hungary "lost" during yesterday's vote. 24 of the 27 EU member states voted in favor of banning gas imports from Russia, while Bulgaria abstained.

The decision was structured in such a way that no unanimity of votes was required. "We will oppose the violation of the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality," Fico declared. Slovakia will coordinate its position with Hungary. Fico did not say when Slovakia would file its lawsuit.

Orbán considers import ban as a sanction

Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that the ban on the import of natural gas from Russia, contrary to how the EU Commission presents it, is in reality not formally a trade policy measure, but a sanction. Sanctions require unanimity of votes, which Hungary and Slovakia could have prevented.

According to Slovak Economy Minister Denisa Sakova, Slovakia will reduce its gas imports from Russia to 33 percent by December 2025. Until just a few years ago, Slovakia imported almost all of its gas from Russia.

Slovakia does not want to completely give up Russian gas, partly because, as a landlocked country, it does not have direct access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals.

In addition to various energy-intensive industries, households in Slovakia are also heavily dependent on gas for heating.

The EU wants to end gas deals with its former main supplier and deprive Russia of a key source of revenue to finance its war in Ukraine. The law stipulates that imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) must stop by the end of 2026 and gas supplies through pipelines by the end of 2027. /DW
