Chancellor Merz: The time has come to finalize the EU-US tariff agreement

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called today for a final decision to be made on the European Union's tariff agreement with the United States.

At a joint press conference with Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in Berlin, Merz said that the foundations have been laid for this agreement to enter into force.

However, he warned that the US should not again have doubts about the agreement reached last July. The German Chancellor said that the American side should have an interest in ensuring that the agreements are respected and not called into question.

"We are not prepared to accept a deterioration of this agreement," Merz said.

While the EU-US deal was reached last year, it still needs the approval of the European Parliament to make it official. The parliament formally suspended the agreement last week as tensions over Greenland escalated.

The plan includes allowing US industrial goods to be imported into the EU duty-free. In exchange for these EU commitments, Trump agreed to refrain from imposing specific tariffs. Merz noted that negotiations with Washington were still ongoing in two areas, steel and aluminum. /CNA
