 Plane with 15 people on board disappears near Colombia-Venezuela border

A passenger plane with 15 people on board has disappeared near Colombia's border with Venezuela, according to state airline Satena and aviation authorities. The flight, operating on the Cucuta-Ocana route, lost contact with air traffic control about 10 minutes before reaching its destination.

In an official statement, Satena said flight NSE 8849 last reported contact with air traffic control on the morning of January 28. The missing aircraft is a Beechcraft 1900 with registration number HK4709, operated by SEARCA. Satena confirmed that 13 passengers and two crew members were on board when contact was lost.

The Civil Aeronautics Authority reported that emergency protocols were activated after the aircraft disappeared between the municipalities of Hacari and Playa de Belen. Search operations are being carried out in coordination with rescue organizations and a Unified Command Post has been established to support response efforts.

Authorities confirmed that two political candidates were among those on board: Diogenes Quintero, a candidate for the House of Representatives, and Carlos Salcedo, a candidate for the Place of Peace.

The national airline has activated all available resources in coordination with the Command and Control Center of the Colombian Space Force and the Directorate of Technical and Accident Investigation of the Civil Aviation Authority to locate the plane. The airline also announced a dedicated hotline for family members seeking official information. /CNA
