US sanctions on Serbian oil/Vucic: Expected on January 10 or 13

The Government of Serbia has approved a decision to establish a coordinating body to guarantee gas and oil supplies, following the imposition of potential US sanctions on the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS) due to Russian ownership.

The statement said that this body will direct and coordinate the work and activities of the working groups - one that monitors the activities of the American Treasury, and the other for negotiations and agreements on the supply of natural gas to Serbia from Russia.

The Serbian President, Aleksandar Vu?i?, told the Serbian Public Television, RTS, that he expects the US to impose sanctions on NIS on January 10 or 13.

Russian state-owned company Gazprom Neft and its parent company Gazprom have held the majority of NIS shares, 56.15 percent, since 2008, while 29.87 percent of the company is owned by the state of Serbia.

On January 4, Vucic said that the US Undersecretary for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment, Jose Fernanez, confirmed to him that the US will impose sanctions on NIS.

The US State Department told Radio Free Europe on December 16 that it does not confirm the sanctions, but "is committed to disrupting Russia's revenue generation as well as the financing networks that Russia uses to support the war against Ukraine."

The American ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, told RTS on December 23 that he is not aware of the imposition of sanctions.

However, according to him, "there are concerns" whether the NIS in Russian hands is somehow helping to finance Moscow's war in Ukraine, and that these issues should be carefully analyzed.
