NATO Summit, Stoltenberg: Support for Ukraine is in the interest of security

NATO members have pledged their support for an "irreversible path" to Ukraine's membership, as well as more aid, the BBC reports.

While a formal timeline for joining the military alliance was not agreed at a summit in Washington, the 32 members of the military alliance said they had "unwavering" support.

NATO has also announced further integration with Ukraine's military, and members have committed 40 billion euros in aid next year, including F-16 fighter jets and air defense support.

The bloc's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said: "Support for Ukraine is not charity, it is in our security interest."

The ongoing occupation of Ukraine was high on the agenda at the NATO summit, and a statement agreed by all members said Russia "remains the most significant and direct threat" to security.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that US-made F-16 aircraft are in the process of being transferred to Ukraine from Denmark and the Netherlands. This will be the first time Ukraine has received an advanced aircraft, something Kiev has long sought. Blinken said at the summit that the planes will be in use this summer.

Zelensky also met with US politicians from both the Democratic and Republican parties, a move designed to shore up cross-party support for Ukraine after a congressional gridlock earlier this year saw a major military aid package delayed for several months. / CNA
