The French judiciary has launched preliminary investigations against the former leader of the Rassemblement National (RN) party, Marine Le Pen, on suspicion of illegal financing of the 2022 presidential election campaign. At that time, the right-wing populist was defeated by the current president Emmanuel Macron in runoff round.

As reported by the Paris prosecutor's office, he is suspected of misappropriation of funds, fraud and falsification of documents. Among other things, a loan received during the election campaign is being investigated. The investigation began in early July. The cause is a report of the Commission for Bank Accounts for the Campaign, which was presented in 2023, in which the accounts of all candidates are analyzed.

11.5 million euros for the presidential race

In her third race for the post of head of state, Le Pen had invested around 11.5 million euros, exceeding the ceiling of costs provided by the law.

In France campaign costs are limited by law and if the funds are used legally, the expenses incurred are reimbursed proportionately by the state.

The commission responsible for the electoral campaign had criticized that Le Pen had spent around 300,000 euros on advertisements on buses. Likewise, after the election campaign of 2017, the commission criticized that Le Pen had received about 870 thousand euros in foreign currency.

Le Pen and more than 20 other defendants will soon answer in court on suspicion of misappropriating EU funds. The trial is scheduled to begin in late September. Prosecutors are convinced that between 2004 and 2016, a number of assistants to RN MEPs in the European Parliament actually worked for the party and not for elected officials. Le Pen denies the accusations./ DW
