The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico

Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico said he was back at work on Tuesday, nearly two months after he was wounded by a gunman.

Fico, 59, was shot at close range on May 15 in a town in central Slovakia and underwent two lengthy operations.

The gunman, identified by Slovak media as Juraj Cintula, 71, is in custody awaiting trial.

Slovak media reported that Fico, who is often criticized by the European Union for his nationalist leanings, went to his cabinet meeting through a tunnel to avoid reporters.

"Dear progressive liberal media and opposition, I apologize for surviving, but I'm back," Fico wrote on Facebook, also posting a photo of his office.

When Fico took office last fall, Slovakia refused to continue military aid to Ukraine, which has been fighting Russian occupation since 2022.

Fico himself has supported peace talks with Russia.

He was released from the hospital on May 31, while he made his first public appearance at a ceremony near Bratislava, last Friday./ Rel
