The White House dismissed doubts about President Joe Biden's mental health.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre denied that Biden is being treated for Parkinson's disease, which can cause stiff movements and slurred speech.

"Has the president been treated for Parkinson's? No. Is he being treated for Parkinson's? No", she said in a conference with journalists.

Jean-Pierre was responding to a question about a report in the New York Times that an expert on Parkinson's disease has visited the White House eight times since last year.

A letter released late Monday by Biden's doctor clarified that the specialist in question, Kevin Cannard, has been a consultant neurologist at the White House since 2012 and that he helps "thousands of active-duty members who work in support of the operations of the White House".

The president's doctor, Kevin O'Connor, also said Biden has not seen a neurologist outside of his annual checkup.

Biden, 81, a Democrat, will run for re-election in November's presidential election.

Questions about his mental health have intensified since his poor performance in a June 27 debate with Republican challenger Donald Trump.

In that debate, Biden stuttered throughout and failed to challenge Trump's attacks, which, in many cases, included false claims.

Biden admitted that he did not have a good performance, but said that the re-election of Trump "would destroy democracy". /REL
