Rutte in Ukrainian parliament: NATO's position on Ukraine remains unchanged

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is in Kiev, where he delivered a speech to the Ukrainian parliament. During his speech, Rutte said that NATO's attention to Ukraine's security will not diminish despite global challenges. He stressed that the alliance's position on Ukraine has remained consistent since before the Russian invasion and remains unchanged to this day. 

"I want to assure you that NATO stands by Ukraine. That was true before Russia's full-scale invasion, it was true on February 24, 2022, and it has been true every day since ," he said.

The Secretary General's presence and speech were announced at the opening of the session by the First Deputy Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, Oleksandr Kornienko, who emphasized that Rutte's visit is a practical sign of support for Ukraine and a strong message of unity among allies.

Addressing the deputies, the head of the North Atlantic Alliance praised the resilience and courage of the Ukrainian people. 

"It is a great honor to be with you today, in the heart of a vibrant and democratic Ukraine. The Ukrainian nation is fighting an extremely fierce and courageous war. You are the representatives of this people, who continue to work even in the midst of daily bombings ," he said.

As part of his visit, Mark Rutte, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, honored the memory of fallen Ukrainian soldiers on Independence Square in Kiev. Zelensky himself announced the information in a post on social media.

"Independence Square. A popular monument of national memory. A monument to our heroes, our warriors, our people who defended Ukraine from the enemy, who fought and gave everything they had in this war. Together with Mark Rutte, today we honored the memory of the fallen defenders of Ukraine. Eternal respect for our soldiers. Eternal gratitude for the feat and defense of the country. Our task is to keep the memory of our heroes alive,"  the Ukrainian president said. /CNA
