Corruption charges/ Former Chinese Justice Minister sentenced to life in prison

Former Chinese Justice Minister Tang Yijun has been sentenced to life in prison. The decision was made by a court in Xiamen, in the southeastern province of Fujian.

According to the court, Tang illegally acquired property worth more than 137 million yuan (about 19.71 million dollars) between 2006 and 2022, using his public position to benefit himself.

The court said he abused his power in matters involving company listings, land purchases, bank loans and the handling of court cases.

The former minister was also banned from participating in politics and all his personal property was confiscated. The sentence is part of a crackdown on corruption by Chinese President Xi Jinping. 

China's anti-corruption agency recently announced that it had opened an investigation into Wang Xiangxi, the country's emergency management minister, in one of the rare cases of a serving minister being investigated. /CNA
