Heavy snowfall in Japan kills 30 people

Heavy snowfall has killed 30 people in Japan over the past two weeks. The Japanese government has sent in the military to help residents in Aomori prefecture, which has been hit hardest, with up to 4.5 meters of snow piled up in isolated areas.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called an emergency meeting of her cabinet yesterday and asked ministers to do everything possible to protect the lives of citizens.

Strong cold air masses have caused heavy snowfall in recent weeks along the Sea of ??Japan coast, with some areas recording more than double the normal amount for the season.

Since January 20, 30 people have died in the snowfall, according to Japan's fire and disaster management agency.

Aomori Prefecture Governor Soichiro Miyashita said yesterday that he had asked the military to intervene and that they had gone and helped clear snow from the homes of elderly residents.

Walls of snow up to 1.83 m covered the territory of the prefectural capital, highlighting that the personnel responsible for clearing the snow are unable to cope with the situation.

"The risk of accidents, potentially fatal, for example due to snow falling from roofs or the collapse of buildings, is immediate," the prefect said during a press conference. /CNA
