Trump seeks $1 billion in damages from Harvard University

US President Donald Trump has announced that he will seek $1 billion in damages from Harvard University in his administration's ongoing conflict with the institution.

The news comes after the New York Times reported that the US president's administration was forced to back down from its demand for a $200 million payment in negotiations with the university.

Trump officials have accused Harvard of not doing enough to combat anti-Semitism during pro-Palestinian protests. Harvard has denied the accusation.

Harvard has been a central target in the White House's campaign to eradicate what it calls "radical left" ideologies on American campuses.

Last April, Trump revoked about $2 billion in research grants to Harvard and froze federal funding. The university sued the Trump administration over the move, saying no government should dictate what private universities can teach, who they can admit and hire, and what areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.

A US federal court later overturned the billion-dollar funding cuts, ruling that the government had violated the university's free speech rights.

The White House vowed to immediately reverse the scandalous decision, saying Harvard remains ineligible for future grants. Before Monday's announcement, the administration had been in discussions with Harvard about a possible deal to unlock federal funding.

"We are now seeking a billion dollars in damages and want nothing to do with Harvard University in the future ," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Monday.

Trump has previously threatened to revoke Harvard's tax-exempt status and take control of the university's patents stemming from state-funded research.

Three other Ivy League universities, Columbia, Penn and Brown, reached agreements with Trump to preserve funding that was at risk due to similar claims by the administration, rather than going to court. /CNA
