Russia says it will continue its oil and gas projects despite US sanctions

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Saturday denounced new US sanctions against its energy sector. She described them as attempts to damage the Russian economy by risking, as stated in the statement, the destabilization of global markets. Moscow said the country would press ahead with major oil and gas projects despite the sanctions.

"The sanctions constitute an attempt to inflict some damage on the Russian economy, even at the cost of destabilizing world markets as President Joe Biden's disgraceful term in power draws to a close," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"Despite the wrangling in the White House and the machinations of the Russophobic lobby in the West, to drag the global energy sector into the "hybrid war" promoted by the United States against Russia, our country has been and remains a key and reliable player in the market global fuel," the statement continued.

Friday's sanctions were the broadest package of sanctions the United States has imposed so far, targeting Russia's oil and gas revenues, part of a move to give Kiev and the incoming President's administration elected Donald Trump, advantage to reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.

The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Gazprom Neft SIBN.MM, Surgutneftegas, as well as 183 vessels that have transported Russian oil, many of which are part of the so-called shadow fleet of tankers operating in aid of Russia from non-western companies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the measures would deal a substantial blow to Moscow.

"The less income Russia earns from oil, the sooner peace will be restored," he said/ VOA
