US sanctions Serbian oil industry due to Russian ownership

The United States on Friday included the Serbian Oil Industry in the package of sanctions against the main Russian oil producers, Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas.

The Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS), majority-owned by Russian companies Gazprom Neft and Gazprom, is Serbia's sole supplier of gas and the owner of two pipelines that transport gas from Russia to Serbia.

Serbia, which officially seeks membership in the European Union, maintains close relations with Moscow and has refused to join sanctions against Russia over its aggression in Ukraine.

Russian companies own about 56 percent of the shares in the Serbian Oil Industry.

The Serbian President said on Friday that the US demands the "complete withdrawal of Russian capital and interests" from the Serbian Oil Industry and the transformation of ownership must be completed within 45 days and must be approved by the United States./VOA
