Appeals court refuses to block Trump's sentencing decision
President-elect of the USA, Donald Trump

The New York Court of Appeals refused to block Donald Trump's conviction in the Stormy Daniels case.

The US Supreme Court will now have the last word. Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to overturn Friday's sentence. His lawyers appealed to the country's highest court on Wednesday after New York courts refused to delay sentencing by Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over the trial on 34 charges related to falsifying business records.

While Merchan has indicated that he will not impose a prison sentence or a fine, Trump's lawyers argued that a possible sentence would have inevitable consequences.

They have characterized the case as politically motivated and say the conviction could disrupt the smooth transition of power as he prepares to return to the White House on January 20.

Trump's lawyers have argued that the trial violates the Supreme Court's decision last summer to grant Trump immunity from prosecution for actions he took while president. The head of the White House is accused of hiding an illegal payment in the amount of 130 thousand dollars to the actress of pornographic films Stormy Daniels, who had threatened in 2016 during the election campaign that she would reveal that Trump had had sexual relations with her . The Jan. 10 conviction will make Trump the first person convicted of a felony to serve in the White House.
