Israel carries out retaliatory attacks against Houthi rebels

Israeli warplanes targeted Houthi rebels in Yemen on January 10, including an energy station and seaports, in response to drone and missile attacks by the rebels.

Israel has also warned that it will target the group's leaders.

Since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have fired dozens of rockets and drones at Israel in what they say is solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli airstrikes come after Israel's military shot down two drones believed to have been launched from Yemen a day earlier.

The Israeli military said it has targeted Houthi rebel military targets in the coastal area and other parts of Yemen.

The attacks, according to Israel, were in response to rebel attacks against the state.

Israel said more than 20 warplanes took part in the attack.

Afterwards, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that the Yemeni rebels had been punished for their continued attacks on his country.

"As we promised, the Houthi rebels are paying and they will continue to pay a high price for the aggression against us," he said, vowing not to tolerate attacks on Israel.

Despite minimal damage, because Israeli defense systems have shot down most of the rebels' rockets and drones, the Yemeni rebels have significantly hampered civilian life in Israel.

Meanwhile, Houthi rebels said that in the last 48 hours they have targeted Jaffa, the name they use to refer to the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been fighting in Gaza against Hamas – the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – a group that has condemned recent Israeli attacks in Yemen.

The Houthi rebels have also targeted shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since the start of the war in Gaza, prompting retaliatory strikes by the United States and Britain./REL
