Russia has committed numerous human rights violations in the Crimean Peninsula since it annexed it in 2014, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) said on Tuesday.

In its ruling, the court said the violations include inhumane or degrading treatment, violations of the right to life, violations of religious freedom and freedom of expression.

The case was brought to the ECHR by Ukraine, which accused Russia of persecuting Ukrainians because of their political positions or their activities in favor of Kiev, which happened mainly in Crimea, but also in other parts of Ukraine or in Russia.

Russia has in the past denied accusations that it has violated human rights and repressed political opponents on the annexed peninsula.

"The court decided ... that Russia should take measures as soon as possible for the safe return of the relevant prisoners transferred from Crimea to prisons on the territory of the Russian Federation," the decision reads.

The court in Strasbourg has previously said the case is unrelated to whether the annexation of Crimea was legal under international law, but did take into account the large Russian military presence in Crimea between January and March 2014 without the prior consent of Ukraine./ REL
