Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia, the Kremlin announced on Tuesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said preparations were being made for Modi's visit, but did not give a date, adding that it would be jointly decided later.

Russia has maintained strong ties with India since the Cold War, and New Delhi's importance as a key trading partner for Moscow has grown even more since the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022 to launch its invasion.

China and India have become the main buyers of Russian oil after the United States and its allies imposed sanctions on Russian oil exports to most Western markets.

Under Modi's rule, India has not condemned Russia's war in Ukraine, while emphasizing the need for a peaceful solution.

Modi was recently re-elected as Prime Minister for the third consecutive term.

He visited Russia for the last time in 2019, for an economic forum in the port of Vladivostok. His last visit to Moscow was in 2015./ REL
