Russia: 10 people have been killed by Ukrainian attacks in Belgorod

Ten people, including a child, were killed and 45 others were injured as a result of Ukrainian attacks on Saturday in the center of Russia's provincial capital, Belgorod, Russian authorities said.

Regional governor Vycheslav Gladkov said the attack hit a residential area and called on all residents to protect themselves from airstrikes.

The Belgorod region, which straddles the northern border with Ukraine, has faced artillery and drone attacks all year, as have other Russian borderlands.

For these attacks, the Russian authorities have blamed Ukraine.

Two residents told the Reuters news agency that they had seen air defense missiles rising into the sky, followed by explosions in the air.

Kommersant newspaper cited sources within Russia's Investigative Committee as saying that rockets fired from Ukraine's Kharkiv region hit a shopping mall, residential buildings and a car.

Kiev has not commented on the attack, which rarely claims responsibility for attacks inside its neighboring country.

But Ukrainian media outlet RBC-Ukraine cited Ukrainian sources as saying that Ukrainian forces attacked Belgorod in response to Russian bombing of Ukrainian cities in the past two days.

At least 30 people were killed and over 160 others were injured in Russian bombing of major Ukrainian cities on December 28 and 29.

Ukraine has described the Russian missile attack as the largest so far in the war of aggression that Moscow launched in February 2022.

The targets of the attacks were the capital Kiev, as well as large cities such as Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Lvini.

The Ukrainian Air Force said it had never seen so many missiles launched at once./ REL
