Giant waves threaten people and homes in a California town

Bulldozers built giant sand barriers Friday to protect beachfront homes in one of the California cities hit hard this week by tremendous waves created by storms in the Pacific Ocean.

Dozens of people watched as emergency barriers were built in an area of ??the city of Ventura, where a large wave on Thursday battered people and vehicles at the ocean's edge as it swept up the beach and into a neighborhood.

"We've had big waves before, but never like this," said Karris Kutivan, who has lived for nine years in the picturesque coastal town, about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

"What I understood from this situation is that I want to live near the beach, but not on the beach", said Mr. Kutivan.

Eight people were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries after the surge incident Thursday, according to Ventura County authorities, who closed beaches and harbors until Dec. 31.

Similar waves hit other beaches on Thursday along the California coast, flooding parking lots, roads and prompting evacuation warnings for low-lying areas.

Waves were a little lower on Friday, but the National Weather Service warned that warnings would return on Saturday for another round of extremely dangerous conditions for those who prefer to play sports in the ocean waves.

The Los Angeles-area weather office wrote that powerful cyclones over North Pacific waters were creating waves 12 to 15 feet (3.6 to 5 meters) high, creating "tremendous wave energy across coastal waters."

In some areas along California, waves are forecast to reach 7.6 meters. Astronomically high tides are adding a significant risk of more coastal flooding, weather researchers said.

"Overall, this is expected to be an exceptional high and coastal flooding event that has not occurred in many years," the weather service wrote./ VOA
