Amid tensions, Ukraine and Hungary prepare the Zelenskiy-Orban meeting

Ukraine and Hungary are preparing to hold a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the near future, the chief of staff of the Ukrainian president announced on Thursday, while Hungary has recently taken steps that have cooled the relationship between the two countries.

Earlier this month, all European Union countries, with the exception of Hungary, agreed to start talks on Ukraine's membership. Union leaders managed to sidestep Mr Orban's objections by asking him to leave the room when the decision was to be made.

But, they failed to overcome Mr. Orban's resistance to the revision of the EU budget, with the aim of channeling 50 billion Euros to Kiev. The matter is expected to be taken up again during an emergency high-level meeting in February. Mr. Orban wants funds for Kiev to come from outside the EU budget.

The Ukrainian president's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, made his comments after a "fruitful phone call" with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

"We are working to organize a meeting between the two leaders in the near future," Mr Yermak said on social media platform X.

He added that Ukraine's progress on the path to European integration was also discussed.

Mr. Zelensky said a little earlier that the two countries should organize a constructive meeting to discuss the problems in their relationship. Mr. Orban later confirmed that he has accepted the invitation to meet./ VOA
