Pakistan, former Prime Minister Khan is not allowed to run in the 2024 elections

Pakistan's election body has barred former prime minister Imran Khan from running in the 2024 national elections in two constituencies, officials and his party team said on Saturday.

The 71-year-old former cricket star has been embroiled in a tangle of political and legal battles since he was ousted as prime minister in April 2022. He has not been seen in public since he was sentenced to three years in prison in August for the illegal sale of state gifts during the time he led the country, from 2018 to 2022.

Mr. Khan is disqualified from running in national elections scheduled for February 8 due to a corruption conviction, but he still filed his nomination papers on Friday, a spokesman for his team announced.

In a list of rejected candidates from the Lahore constituency, the Election Commission of Pakistan said Mr Khan's candidacy was rejected because he was not a registered voter of the constituency and because he had been "convicted by a court and disqualified".

His team said the commission had also refused him to contest the elections in his hometown Mianwali as well.

Former prime minister Khan, who is widely seen as the country's most popular leader, says he is being targeted by Pakistan's still-influential military, which wants to keep him out of the election race. The army denies the allegations.

On Friday, Pakistan's Supreme Court granted bail to Mr. Khan in connection with a case in which he is accused of sharing state secrets, a day after a high court refused to overturn a ruling disqualifying him from the election./ VOA
