Increased melting of West Antarctic ice is "inevitable" in the coming decades, a new study has warned, the BBC reports.

Floating pieces of ice extend from the main ice sheet into the ocean and play a key role in maintaining glaciers.

But as chunks of ice melt, that could mean the ice behind it accelerates, releasing more into the oceans.

The study's findings suggest that future sea-level rise may be greater than previously assumed.

In 2021, the UN's climate body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), released its latest estimates of future sea level rise.

It predicted a global average rise in sea level from 0.28m to 1.01m by 2100, a major reason being the melting of glaciers and ice sheets.

Sea level rise of about one meter may not sound like much, but even these increases would put hundreds of millions of people around the world at risk from coastal flooding.

Processes caused by faster melting of ice sheets "could lead to the collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet," the authors suggest./ CNA
