The US sends air defense systems to the Middle East

The United States announced on Sunday that it will send additional military assets to the Middle East, amid fears that the war between Israel and Hamas could spread across the region.

The Pentagon said it will take the air defense system known as THAAD, along with the Patriot surface-to-air missile system, to the Middle East.

The THAAD system is designed to shoot down short- and medium-range ballistic missiles just before they hit the ground.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said additional troops have also been put on standby to move to the region, although he did not say how many.

Israel continued its shelling of Gaza on Sunday, killing about 50 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Israel's military also carried out airstrikes in neighboring Syria, killing two civilians, according to Syrian state media.

Additionally, Israel said its warplanes struck Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Saturday and that one of its soldiers was hit by an anti-tank missile during border fighting that killed six soldiers of the Iran-backed group. .

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Lebanon's acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday that the Lebanese will be affected by the war if his country is involved in it.

Israel launched a full siege and bombardment of Gaza on October 7, after Hamas militants crossed the border and launched rampaging attacks in southern Israel, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians.

Gaza's health ministry said on Saturday that at least 4,385 Palestinians have been killed, including hundreds of children, as a result of Israeli retaliatory bombing in the tiny territory of about 2.3 million people, half of whom have been forced to move from north to south Gaza. ./ REL
