Israel has called on its citizens to leave Egypt and Jordan immediately, Israel's National Security Council said on Saturday, as regional tensions have risen sharply in the wake of the war in Gaza.

"Israel's National Security Council has raised to level four [threat] warnings for those traveling to Egypt (including Sinai) and Jordan: it is requested not to travel to those countries and those there to leave... sooner", says the press release of the Council.

The announcement comes just days after Israel withdrew its diplomats from Turkey as a precautionary measure, following an earlier request asking its citizens to leave as well.

These calls come at a time of huge protests across the Middle East against Israel's bombing of the Gaza Strip.

The war erupted after Hamas militants launched a rampage in southern Israeli towns they had entered from the Gaza Strip, taking around 200 hostages and killing more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli officials.

As a result, Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas and launched a bombing campaign in response, leveling residential blocks in Gaza and killing more than 4,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which is led by Hamas./ Rel
