Israel Strikes West Bank Mosque, Vows Tougher Attacks in Gaza

Israel's military said on Sunday it had struck a cell of the militant group Hamas allegedly holed up in a mosque in the occupied West Bank, and warned it would intensify its bombing of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. .

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the al-Ansar mosque, which is located in the Jenin refugee camp, was being used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants. The IDF described the site as a "terrorist compound" that was being used to plan attacks.

Jenin is considered a stronghold of Palestinian militants, where the Israeli army often carries out deadly attacks.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said two Palestinians were killed during Israeli strikes there. Three more Palestinians were killed during clashes in the Nablus and Jenin areas on Sunday, she said.

The security situation in the West Bank has been tense for several months now, and tensions rose even more after October 7, when Hamas militants in Gaza breached border defenses and entered southern Israel, killing more than 1,400 people and kidnapping at least 210 others.

This has raised fears of an outbreak of daily violence between Palestinians, Israeli settlers and the Israeli army in the West Bank.

According to the Palestinian Ministry, 90 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank in the past two weeks. Since the beginning of this year, 286 Palestinians have been killed.

Meanwhile, the Israeli bombardment in the besieged Gaza Strip continued on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

More than 4,300 people have been killed in Gaza as a result of Israeli bombardment since October 7, according to the Hamas-led Ministry.

This figure cannot be independently verified.

Israel's military spokesman, Daniel Hagari, said Israel will intensify attacks against Hamas in the Gaza Strip ahead of the expected ground invasion.

"We have entered the next phase of the war in the best conditions", said Hagari on Saturday night./ REL
