An Iranian court sentenced two journalists to prison on Sunday for reporting on the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in 2022.

Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that Niloofar Hamedi was sentenced to seven years in prison, while Elahah Mohammadi was sentenced to six years on charges of "collaborating with the hostile US Government."

They also received additional sentences of five years imprisonment each for "acting against national security" and one year imprisonment for "propaganda against the system".

The lawyers of the journalists said that they have rejected the accusations.

Amin's death in the custody of the so-called "Morality Police" for allegedly violating Iran's strict headscarf law sparked months of nationwide protests that became the biggest challenge to Iran's theocratic government in decades. The last.

Hamed was arrested after he photographed Amin's parents hugging in a hospital in Tehran while their daughter was in a coma.

Mohammadi was later arrested after reporting on Amin's burial in his hometown of Saqqez.

They have the right to appeal against prison sentences.

Last year, Iran's Intelligence Ministry accused the two journalists of working for a US intelligence agency.

Mohammadi is a journalist for Ham Mihan newspaper, while Hamedi is a photographer for Shargh newspaper.

Both are being held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison as of September 2022.

Last week, Amin's lawyer, Saleh Nikbakht, was sentenced to one year in prison for propaganda against the state and for commenting on the case in local and international media./ REL
