The death toll as a result of Russian airstrikes is increasing

Eight people were injured in Russian airstrikes in central Kharkiv on Saturday, which hit a medical center, residential blocks and other civilian buildings, the region's governor announced.

The death toll from Russia's biggest airstrike on Ukraine rose to 39 on Saturday, as rescue teams continued to clear the rubble left behind by the strikes, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.

Russia hit towns and villages across Ukraine with 158 missiles and drones on Friday, in what Ukrainian officials described as the worst airstrike since the war began in February 2022.

"Almost 120 towns and villages, hundreds of civilian objects have been damaged," Mr Zelenskiy said on the Telegram app.

The Ukrainian president said 39 people were killed and 159 wounded in the attacks, which involved various types of ballistic missiles and Iranian-made drones. Ukraine's air defense said it managed to shoot down 87 Russian missiles and over 30 drones.

At least 16 people were killed in the capital Kiev, the city's highest civilian death toll in nearly 22 months of fighting, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. The city declared January 1 a day of mourning to honor the victims.

Mayor Klitschko said rescue teams were continuing to search the rubble in Kiev, where a warehouse and several residential and commercial buildings were hit.

Rescue operations continued in other towns and villages in the center, south and west of the country, local officials said.

Local authorities rushed to make it possible to repair thousands of broken windows in residential buildings and restore heating.

The weather is warm in most of Ukraine with temperatures hovering around 4 Celsius, something unusual for this season for Ukraine.

However, forecasters expect a drop in temperatures to zero during the next week./ VOA
